JA Solar Supplies Malaysia’s Sabah Solar Plant

The utility-scale solar project in Sabah, Malaysia is expected to resolve the power shortage problem in the state.

China’s JA Solar Holdings Co. Ltd will supply 50MW(AC) modules for Malaysia’s first utility-scale solar project. The 50MW utility-scale inaugural project in Sabah marks a milestone in solar energy development in Malaysia.

The project has gained attention from the country’s Ministry of Energy, Energy Commission, Sabah Electricity with YB Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Maximus Johnity Ongkili, the Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water (Malaysia), visiting the project site on last June.

JA Solar provided 50MW(AC) of high-performance Percium mono-modules to the project. The company claims the modules enable lower light induced degradation rate, better anti-PID performance and higher power output. And they can operate in a hot and humid environment.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2017. In addition, the solar project is expected to create over 200 jobs and resolve the power shortage problem in Sabah. Cao Bo, JA Solar’s Vice President commented, “We believe this [design] win demonstrates our value proposition and technical innovation with high-performance solar modules. We have invested $163 million in our Penang, Malaysia manufacturing operation to produce poly and mono cells with the annual capacity of 1,000MW.”
